Canvas

Canvas is the Learning Management System (LMS) created by Instructure that Penn State has selected to meet many of the e-learning needs of the University. Canvas is a Web-based application that allows the University to more easily develop and deliver partially and fully online courses and programs. Canvas also meets the University's needs for the administration, documentation, and grade recording and reporting related to academic e-learning delivery.

You can access Canvas at: https://psu.instructure.com

You will find a wide range of video tutorials, documentation, and other helpful resources at: http://canvas.psu.edu/students/

As an "all-in-one" online teaching and learning platform, Canvas provides a number of built-in tools and functions, while also providing an open architecture capable of significant extension (through integration of third party tools). Canvas primarily provides the following (not a comprehensive list):

  • Flexibility and support for rich content authoring and the increasing use of digital media
  • Improved social presence for students and faculty; solutions for common interaction, collaboration, and group work needs
  • A wide variety of grading, assessment, and grade management tools
  • An intuitive interface with a contemporary look and feel
  • Optimization for mobile delivery and compatibility with most mobile devices; reliable functionality across all major browsers
  • ADA compliance and ability to satisfy common accessibility needs
  • Support for learning and administrative analytics and outcomes
  • Adaptability to leverage developments in education and technology
  • Near 24/7/365 availability to meet the needs of Penn State’s increasingly global distance audience
